Acting on Dreams: The Serakatuma Arts Pilot Initiative
How Rapulana Seiphemo is helping Mafikeng’s youth through theatre, training and transformation.
In Mafikeng, something extraordinary is taking shape — not in politics or business, but on a stage where young people are finding their voices, building confidence and turning dreams into real opportunity.
Led by award-winning actor and producer Rapulana Seiphemo, the Serakatuma Arts Pilot Initiative is designed to support and uplift youth through the power of performance, storytelling and skills development.
This initiative is proudly supported by the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture, aligned with the 2025 national theme:
“Celebrating 30 Years of Democracy.”
A Real Opportunity — Not Just a One-Day Workshop
The initiative begins with open auditions hosted at the Kobo Segole Conference Hall, where hundreds of young people step forward — many for the very first time — with raw talent, courage and hope.
Those selected enter an eight-month training programme, including structured masterclasses and mentorship in areas such as:
- Acting Techniques
- Stage Performance
- Creative Development
- Storytelling & Expression
- Industry Exposure (on-stage and behind the scenes)
This is not just a talent search – it’s a creative development pipeline designed to prepare youth for real careers in the arts and creative industries.
Drama With Purpose
Serakatuma believes storytelling can do more than entertain — it can educate, challenge and heal.
Throughout the programme, participants explore real social issues affecting young people today, including:
- Gender-based violence
- Substance abuse
- Homophobia
- Youth crime
The final performance is designed to spark conversation, build awareness, and inspire change — through theatre that speaks directly to community realities.
Honouring a Legacy
The initiative also carries a deep tribute to the late Presley Chweneyagae, the iconic actor best known for Tsotsi, who had committed to supporting the programme as a masterclass facilitator and acting coach.
His legacy lives on through every young voice rising from this initiative — carrying forward his passion for empowering the next generation.
More Than Mentorship — A Social Intervention
The Serakatuma Arts Pilot Initiative is more than a project. It is a meaningful, community-rooted intervention aimed at building confidence, developing talent, and opening doors for youth through the arts.
